Will Republicans Ever Learn to Fight?
For decades, the Republican Party has been accurately labeled the “Stupid Party” for its almost genetic disposition to avoid confrontational politics and fight fire with fire just as its counterpart in the Democrat or “Evil Party” embraces that approach with passion and pride.
Throughout most of the last century, the Republican Party was content to play the role of loyal and polite opposition to the Democrat Party. During the 1930s, it failed miserably to stop FDR’s revolutionary blueprint to transform America into a corporate state modeled after Fascist Italy. Its leadership was content to argue that its only disagreement with Roosevelt was the cost of some of his schemes, not their actual validity or justification. Obviously, there were some notable exceptions in Republican ranks, like Ohio’s great Senator Robert Taft and the crusading anti-Communist Senator from Wisconsin, Joe McCarthy. However, as a general rule, the GOP under Willkie, Dewey, Warren and Eisenhower broadly accepted the agenda of the “New Deal” but simply argued over the details. Ike, proclaiming himself a “modern Republican” in 1952, made no effort to roll back FDR’s policies, but in some cases actually expanded them, as with extending Social Security benefits and creating a new monster bureaucracy called the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Deficit spending continued into the 1950s with only a few balanced budgets during the Eisenhower Administration. Spending soared to $100 billion per year and Arizona’s Barry Goldwater called Ike’s domestic program a “dime-store New Deal.”
It soon became a cliché that the GOP’s platform was that “we can do it better and cheaper” than the Democrats, implying an acceptance of Democrat policies but simply emphasizing improved efficiency in their implementation.
Yet, the Democrats have never shown any reciprocal interest in pursuing the political game according to rules fashioned by the Marquess of Queensberry. To the Democrats, politics is blood sport. Fair play and honesty play no part. In their book, power is power and no amount of proper parliamentary procedure will deter them from achieving it. That means the two parties have historically fought in an asymmetrical manner. While Republicans have sought compromise, conciliation, and deal-cutting, the Democrats have engaged in vilification, vitriol, and even violence to get their way. Republicans can generally be expected to back down and surrender when faced with the non-stop incoming of the Democrat Party machine and its propaganda media empire.
Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew tried to confront the Left in a modest way when they assumed power in 1969, but Nixon – probably at the behest of accommodationist party members in Congress – soon gave up and largely signed on to the Democrats’ Big Government programs with the exception that he and Agnew were the first to take on the Democrat media in any meaningful manner. After his overwhelming re-election in 1972, there were signs Nixon wanted to finally take on the Democrat establishment and its entrenched “deep state” in Washington, but those plans were derailed by Watergate, a classic example of the Democrats’ “take-no-prisoners” approach to political action.
Throughout Ronald Reagan’s presidency, the “Evil Party” vilified the genial President as an extremist, a warmonger, and even lazy and senile. His policies were portrayed by their controlled media outlets as cruel and devastating to the poor and working class. Despite his efforts to achieve peace with the Soviet Union, he was constantly presented to the public as a saber-rattling old cowboy with an itchy finger poised on the nuclear button. He rarely got a break and the pressure from unified Democrat opposition in Congress and the media often caused him to cave and accept his own “half-a-loaf” negotiating strategy. That led to tax increases, abandoning plans to abolish the Departments of Energy and Education, and amnesty for illegal immigrants. For, to the Democrats, there is no such thing as negotiation. Everything is a “winner take all” proposition. George H.W. Bush learned that lesson profoundly when Democrats forced him to abandon his “no new taxes” pledge and sign on to more tax increases in 1990. That decision cost him a second term in the White House.
Donald Trump was truly the first Republican President in memory who knew how to fight. He battled the Left day in and day out. He almost seemed to relish the combat, probably because he was a Queens street-fighter by nature who could not have climbed to the pinnacle of success in the Manhattan real estate industry by being a patsy or shrinking violet. Yet, his GOP colleagues in Congress were and still are another matter. Mitch McConnell never saw a principle important enough to fight for or a fortress critical enough to defend. The likes of John Boehner and Paul Ryan lived in perpetual fear of the “Evil Party” and desperately groveled for the approval of the prostitute press. Since time immemorial, the battle strategy of congressional Republicans has been to secure the best terms for surrender offered by the Democrats. Their symbol is the white flag, not the proud American Eagle or even the lunky elephant.
Now, under the illegal Biden regime, America is being dismantled and dismembered piece-by-piece as the most radical and extreme coterie of left-wing ideologues in history controls the levers of power in Washington. Court-packing, D.C. statehood, abolition of the filibuster, abolition of the Electoral College, the “Equality Act,” federalization of elections are all in their playbook, being rolled out every other day as their so-called “progressivism” reaches new heights of insanity. Our borders are thrown open to foreign invasion and our cities are ceded to Antifa and BLM which now intimidate and threaten not only the police but judges and juries as well. Chaos, nihilism, and anarchy are the stew cooked up by the Democrat Party, now controlled entirely and exclusively by the children of the 1960s bomb-throwers, street agitators, and draft card-burners, educated mostly at the Saul Alinsky College of Cultural Marxism with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in hate, violence, revolution, and anti-Americanism. They are the ideological progeny of Mao’s Red Guards. They constitute a Fifth Column within the bosom of our disintegrating nation-state and they will have to be crushed soon, very soon.
Will the Republicans fight now? Will they fight ever? Had they fought thirty or forty years ago would we be in this tragic situation today? The Republican Party must now become the vanguard of the counter-revolution to take our country back and they must not fail in this task. They must fight the enemy at the gates just as if Hitler’s troops had landed on our shores in 1943. The threat today is no less serious. Enough of negotiation, compromise, and cutting deals. America’s survival hangs in the balance. And, we have just one command for Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy: either fight with every weapon in your arsenal or get out of the way!
