Against ALL Odds

Dr. James VeltmeyerDr. James Veltmeyer is one of San Diego’s leading physicians and surgeons who has been recognized not only for his top-quality patient care but also for his contributions as a Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Veltmeyer had an almost impossible journey to his current status as one of the area’s most well-respected doctors. Born in South America in 1968, his family became homeless when his father abandoned his mother. Dr. Veltmeyer’s earliest recollections were living on the streets of Ecuador and going days without eating, often being assigned the task of pleading for a few bread rolls at the local Panaderia, and would sometimes have to sacrifice his share, so there was enough for all his brothers and sisters to eat.

Veltmeyer Family Crest

When Dr. Veltmeyer turned 9, his mother made the heartbreaking decision to send him to live with an aunt in the United States. After a two-year effort he obtained a Visa and started his new life in San Diego County. At age 19 he became the sole provider for his family when his mother joined him to live in San Diego. He then began chasing his dream of becoming a doctor by attending school full time and working multiple jobs to make ends meet.

Having such a challenging childhood might have discouraged others, but Dr. Veltmeyer was determined to make a difference, not just for himself but also for others.

After graduating from UC San Diego and Ross University School of Medicine, he completed his residency with UC San Francisco becoming chief resident and overseeing 36 doctors. From there, he began his career at Sharp Grossman Hospital in La Mesa and became Chair of the Department of Family Medicine.

As Chair, Dr. Veltmeyer oversaw over 200 physicians and was recognized as one of San Diego’s leading physicians and surgeons. He took home numerous awards, including San Diego County’s award for “Top Doctor” five years in a row and in 2018 was named “California Hero” by the California State Senate.

Most recently, Dr. Veltmeyer became Chief Medical Officer for Serene Behavioral Health, IPA, and for Therapeutics Solutions International. As a board-certified family medicine physician, he is a member of the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians as well as a longtime member of SGH’s Biomedical Ethics Committee. When news broke out of the current pandemic, Dr. Veltmeyer began his search to find a solution for COVID-19, and was published for his critical reviews twice in the Journal of Translational Medicine and in the U.S National Library of Medicine, “Preclinical and Clinical Evaluation of Nutritional Supplement Designed to Protect Against COVID-19”, and “Suppression of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Pulmonary Inflammation by Transfer Factor Activated Dendritic Cells: StemVacs” as well as “QuadraMune™ for Prevention of COVID-19.” With hope to have significant findings to COVID-19. In his spare time he is also the host of the podcast program “Physician on a Mission,” and his op-eds have appeared in publications across America.

Dr. Veltmeyer and his wife Laura of are the proud parents of two children, Olivia and Landon. When not practicing medicine or spending time with his family, he is an avid sportsman. He enjoys surfing on San Diego’s world-renowned beaches, skiing, playing golf, tennis, and chess. Overall, Dr. Veltmeyer is a shining example of the American Dream by overcoming huge obstacles to achieve success and reputation in his overall life and profession. He did this through religious faith, hard work, a commitment to build a better life for himself and his family, and a deep personal dedication to the founding principles of his adopted country, the United States of America. He believes faith and freedom can help even the most disadvantaged individuals reach for the stars and realize their hopes and dreams. Only in America.
