Dr. James Veltmeyer
Against ALL Odds
Dr. James Veltmeyer is one of California’s leading physicians who has been recognized not only for his top-quality patient care but also for his contributions as a Chief Medical Officer.
Dr. Veltmeyer had an almost impossible journey to his current status as one of the San Diego region’s most well-respected doctors. Born in South America in 1968, his family became homeless when his father abandoned his mother. Dr. Veltmeyer’s earliest recollections were living on the streets of Ecuador and going days without eating, sometimes being assigned the task of pleading for a few bread rolls at the local panaderia and often sacrificing his share, so there was enough for all his brothers and sisters to eat.
When Dr. Veltmeyer turned 9, his mother made the heartbreaking decision to send him to live with an aunt in the United States. After a two-year effort, he obtained a Visa and started his new life in San Diego County. At age 19, he became the sole provider for his family when his mother joined him to live in San Diego. He then began chasing his dream of becoming a doctor by attending school full time and working multiple jobs to make ends meet.
Having such a challenging childhood might have discouraged others, but Dr. Veltmeyer was determined to make a difference, not just for himself but also for others.
After graduating from UC San Diego and Ross University School of Medicine, he completed his residency with UC San Francisco becoming chief resident and overseeing 36 doctors. From there, he began his career at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa and became Chair of the Department of Family Medicine.
As Chair, Dr. Veltmeyer oversaw over 200 physicians and was recognized as one of San Diego’s leading physicians and surgeons. He took home numerous awards, including San Diego County’s award for “Top Doctor” five years in a row and in 2018 was named a “California Hero” by the California State Senate.
Most recently, Dr. Veltmeyer became Chief Medical Officer for Serene Behavioral Health, IPA, and for Therapeutics Solutions International. As a board-certified family medicine physician, he is a member of the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians as well as a longtime member of SGH’s Biomedical Ethics Committee. When news broke of the current pandemic, Dr. Veltmeyer began his search to find a solution for COVID-19 and was published for his critical reviews twice in the Journal of Translational Medicine and in the U.S National Library of Medicine, “Preclinical and Clinical Evaluation of Nutritional Supplement Designed to Protect Against COVID-19” and “Suppression of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Pulmonary Inflammation by Transfer Factor Activated Dendritic Cells: StemVacs” as well as “QuadraMune™ for Prevention of COVID-19.” He is also the host of the podcast program “Physician on a Mission” and his OpEds have appeared in publications across America, including The Washington Times.
Dr. Veltmeyer and his wife Laura are the proud parents of two children, Olivia and Landon. When not practicing medicine or spending time with his family, he is an avid sportsman. He enjoys surfing on San Diego’s world-renowned beaches, skiing, playing golf, tennis and chess.
Dr. Veltmeyer is a shining example of the American Dream, overcoming huge obstacles to achieve success and reputation in his overall life and profession. He did this through religious faith, hard work, a commitment to build a better life for himself and his family and a deep personal dedication to the founding principles of his adopted country, the United States of America. He believes faith and freedom can help even the most disadvantaged individuals reach for the stars and realize their hopes and dreams. Only in America.
